Whitey's became the Army Navy Store in 1949 when Whitey Thwaite branched off from his Berea store that was established in 1948. There were also two other Whitey's store in Elyeria and in Wooster, which are now no longer in service to the public. Back after World War II Whitey's was a surplus store, with 95% of its merchandise was all government issue. Ranging from plane tires to ammo boxes, now it is the other way around with 90% to 95% of the merchandise being commercial. Today people from blue collar jobs to white collar jobs, from the young to the old, they all come into Whitey's for camping gear, military ribbons, military t-shirts, or to flags to show their patriotism, there is something at Whitey's for everyone.
